- 1 Tbsp butter
- 5 medium onions (a mix of yellow and red is ideal), sliced

- 4 slices baguette or sourdough bread

How to Make French Onion Soup:
Heat butter in a sizable pot. Add onions and salt to the melting butter. Remember to use low heat so as not to overcook the ingredients. Cover the ingredients for about 30 minutes, until the onions are soft and caramelized. Also remember to check on the onions and stir every 10 or so minutes.
Add bay leaves, beef broth and wine to the ingredients and simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes. You can also add thyme to the content and season with pepper. Chicken and vegetable broth are other alternatives if beef broth is not available.
Remove the bay leaves. Preheat the broiler and pour the soup into an oven-proof bowl. Top the bowl with a slice of baguette and some cheese. Broil the content for about 3 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
